Furious Swords and Fantastic Warriors

On September 22, 2025, Eureka is releasing the Blu-ray (Region A/B) collection for Furious Swords and Fantastic Warriors, which will include 1974’s Men from the Monastery, 1974’s Shaolin Martial Arts, 1970’s King Eagle, 1973’s Iron Bodyguard, 1975’s Fantastic Magic Baby, 1983’s The Weird Man, 1967’s Trail of the Broken Blade, 1970’s Wandering Swordsman, 1972’s Trilogy of Swordsmanship and 1976’s New Shaolin Boxers.

Distinguished by his penchant for bloodshed and a thematic concentration on the bonds of brotherhood and masculine sacrifice, Chang Cheh is one of the most prolific and accomplished directors ever to emerge from the Hong Kong film industry. Often hailed as the “Godfather of Hong Kong cinema,” he enjoyed a career spanning six decades and worked in a multitude of genres, from Chinese opera to kung fu films via wuxia pian, historical epics and tales of the supernatural.

Presented here are ten films that reveal the range and versatility of Chang’s career as a filmmaker. Traditional wuxia pian is represented by King EagleTrail of the Broken Blade and Wandering Swordsman; choreographed by Lau Kar-leung, Men from the Monastery and Shaolin Martial Arts are both drawn from Chang’s Shaolin cycle, included here alongside New Shaolin BoxersIron Bodyguard, released at the dawn of the kung fu era, is representative of changing trends in Hong Kong cinema; and some of Chang’s more esoteric work is represented by the opera film The Fantastic Magic Baby and the supernatural fantasy The Weird Man. Also included is the anthology film Trilogy of Swordsmanship, to which Chang contributed a segment alongside his contemporaries Yueh Feng and Cheng Kang.

All produced during Chang Cheh’s tenure at Shaw Brothers, these ten films are a testament to the director’s distinct aesthetic style and his recurring thematic preoccupations. Eureka Classics is proud to present this selection of Chang’s work for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK.

On September 15, 2025, Radiance is releasing the Blu-ray for The Betrayal, a 1966 Japanese actioner from director Tokuzo Tanaka (Zatoichi’s Vengeance, Zatoichi the Fugitive).

To protect his clan, an honourable samurai (Raizo Ichikawa, Shinobi) takes the blame for a murder committed by one of his fellows. Presented in a New 4K Restoration, The Hidden Fortress is the story of rival clans, hidden gold and a princess in distress. The Hidden Fortress became Kurosawa’s biggest box office hit to date and won several awards, including the Golden Bear at the 1959 Berlin Film Festival. Some twenty years on, the film’s influence would have even greater impact on the world’s box office, when George Lucas borrowed elements of its plot for the first of his Star Wars series.

This 1978 kung fu oddity is directed by Lo Wei (The Big Boss) and stars the one and only, Jackie Chan (Hidden Strike, Ride On).

Jackie leaps out of the screen in Magnificent Bodyguards, the first Hong Kong movie shot in 3D! The icon joins a team of guards who are escorting an ill man across a land filled danger and possible death, a land known as Stormy Hills, but does the man hold a deadly secret?

Directed by Wei Lo, the person who gave the world the Bruce Lee classics The Big Boss and Fist of Fury, this is prime mandarin madness with a score which will be familiar to lovers of a certain successful sci-fi saga.

Magnificent Bodyguards also stars James Tien (Seaman No. 7), Bruce Leung (Bruce and the Iron Finger) and Wong Ping (The Big Boss Part II).

Iron Angels Trilogy | Blu-ray (Vinegar Syndrome)

Now available for pre-order from Vinegar Syndrome is the Blu-ray (Region A/B/C) for the Iron Angels Trilogy, which includes 1987’s Iron Angels, 1988’s Iron Angels II and 1989’s Iron Angels III.

Read the official details below:

In the world of Hong Kong action cinema, Teresa Woo doesn’t have the same notoriety as many of the other big-name directors. However, unbeknownst to many, she is responsible for bringing us one of the most exhilarating action franchises, the Iron Angels series. Filled with bone-breaking brawls and bullet-riddled action set pieces, Vinegar Syndrome Archive proudly presents this inexplicably overlooked trio of explosive martial arts films for the first time on Blu-ray in the United States.

Iron Angels (aka Fighting Madam, 93 min): After drug enforcement officials destroy opium fields in Thailand, disrupting a global drug network known as the “Golden Triangle,” the officers responsible for the raid are one by one targeted for assassination by the violent cartel. Unable to stop the bloodshed, the government turns towards an elite “spies-for-hire” group known as the Iron Angels. Saijo, the legendary Angel #1, is accompanied by two beautiful and deadly agents, Moon and Elaine, and the trio is then partnered with an American DEA operative named Alex. Together, they discover that the ruthless Madam Yeung has violently taken over the criminal enterprise, and the Iron Angels must stop at nothing to take her down. Soon, the agents find themselves in a bloody fight against Madam Yeung and her group of killers, led by her right-hand man, Mr. Chang (played by fan-favorite Hwang Jang-Lee).

Iron Angels II (aka Fighting Madam 2, 97 min): Now an Iron Angel himself, Alex goes on vacation with Elaine and Moon for much-needed rest and relaxation after completing a dangerous mission. While in Malaysia, Alex meets up with two old friends, Peter and Marco, to enjoy some laughs and reminisce. However, the stakes become deadly when Alex discovers that the CIA is secretly investigating his wealthy friend Peter for funding a government coup. To make matters worse, Elaine has fallen for Peter and soon finds herself held captive by his private army upon discovering his secret. With the help of Iron Angel Kharina, Alex and Moon must head into the jungle to get Elaine back, culminating in a bloody showdown between the Iron Angels and Peter’s private army.

Iron Angels III (aka Return of Iron Angels, 92 min): The Iron Angels are back once again, this time to stop an international terrorist organization hellbent on starting a war between Thailand and Vietnam. Moon must go undercover as a deadly assassin to infiltrate the terrorist group as they are planning to assassinate several high-ranking government officials. In the meantime, Alex and Kharina are partnered with a young newcomer named Kwai and a tech specialist nicknamed “Computer” to assist Moon. However, after losing contact with Moon, it is up to the other Iron Angels to try and stop the assassinations before it is too late. When the group gets word of a potential attack at a government summit, Alex and Kwai jump into action and quickly find themselves in the middle of an all-out battle, good thing they are armed with machine gun-mounted jet packs!

In Siege, Raizo Ichikawa is Mist Saizo, the legendary folk hero and Iga ninja. Working in the service of warlord Yukimura Sanada (Tomisaburo Wakayama), he plots to assassinate Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa, but finds himself facing the might of the nation’s supreme ruler.

RELEASE DATE: May 2025

In May, U.S. label Terror Vision is releasing a Blu-ray for Enter the Panther (aka Conspiracy), a 1975 Taiwanese kung fu film from director Han Bao-Chang (The Great Hero), featuring an early starring role by Bruce Li/Ho Tsung-Tao (Lama Avenger, Super Dragon).

Enter the Panther delivers the hits and kicks of kung fu action at its most violent! A struggle for control of a gold mine begins with a violent poisoning… and doesn’t end until the body count piles high. Martial Arts Master Bruce Li battles his way out of frightening narrow escapes. From the opening scenes through to the brutal fight-to-the-finish, this film is packed with hard-hitting action. This is kung fu at its bloodiest- and Bruce Li at his peak of power!

Terror Vision is proud to present this lost to time Bruceploitation oddity in HD for the very first time (w/ an alt VHS cut). Enter the Panther is one of rarest films from this Martial Arts sub-genre. Terror Vision was honored to work with Severin Films in order to locate what we believe is one of the last remaining prints of this film in existence. It was as beaten and battered as some of the opponents in the movie, and its grindhouse look, and texture will take you back to another time and place!

NOTE: This print came from Spain which it has burned in Spanish subtitles at the bottom.

Special Features:

  • Booklet w/ writing from Shaun Williams, Fanatical Dragon, and Rob Hunter
  • Commentary w/ Martial Arts Historian Frank Djeng
  • Alternate VHS Cut (90min)
  • Newly Created Subtitles
  • 2:35.1
  • 76min/90min
  • Not Rated
  • Region Free

On May 12, 2025, Hammers Films is releasing a 3-Disc 4K Ultra HD Limited Edition collection for Shatter, a 1974 international co-production between Hammer Film Productions of England and Shaw Brothers Studio of Hong Kong.

Hollywood hard man Stuart Whitman and powerhouse martial artist Ti Lung star in this brutal crime thriller filmed entirely on location in Hong Kong by Hammer and the Shaw Brothers. Guest-starring Peter Cushing and sporting a funky soundtrack from Johnny Dankworth’s key collaborator David Lindup, Shatter has been painstakingly restored by Hammer in 4K from the original film negatives.

Professional contract killer Shatter is double-crossed on his latest job and finds himself pursued across Hong Kong, a pawn in the game of his client’s violent criminal agenda.

Disc Features:

  • New commentary with academic and Asian cinema expert Leon Hunt and film historian and writer Adrian Smith.
  • New commentary with Heidi Honeycutt, writer, filmmaker and film programmer, and western/crime movie expert Toby Roan.
  • 1998 commentary with uncredited director Monte Hellman and contributions from Stuart Whitman.
  • Once Upon a Time in the East: Screenwriter and author David Pirie and Little Shoppe of Horrors’ Dick Klemensen examine the state of Hammer in the 1970s and the numerous issues encountered filming Shatter in Hong Kong.
  • Hammer and Tongs: archive interview with Renée Glynne, in charge of continuity on many Hammers, as she reflects on Hong Kong and the various issues that plagued Shatter’s production.
  • Cultural Crossover: Historian and film critic Christina Newland and academic/martial arts cinema expert Wayne Wong examine Shatter’s place in the wider context of 1970s action/crime films and Asian martial arts cinema.
  • Hitting the Right Notes: Musician Mike Lindup reflects on his father, composer David Lindup, and his body of work which covered film soundtracks, library music and arrangements and orchestrations for musicians like Johnny Dankworth.
  • Censored: A comparison of the new, uncensored restoration and the censored master that was previously in circulation for decades.
  • A gallery of stills and publicity material alongside tracks from David Lindup’s score.

Limited Edition and Booklet Features:

  • New article by writer and actor Bruce G. Hallenbeck examining the making of Shatter
  • New article by film journalist Paul Bramhall that investigates “East meets West” productions and the casting of Asian stars in international films
  • New article by author and crime film expert Barry Forshaw who investigates the Golden Age of Crime Movies: the 1970s!
  • New article by writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington who takes a pointed look at the swirling zeitgeist of early 1970s pop culture and how it influenced Shatter
  • New article making an in-depth comparison of the different versions of the Shatter script in the Hammer Archive, how the story developed and how it compares with what’s onscreen
  • New article taking a deep dive that addresses the rumours and guesswork surrounding the making of Shatter with the aid of recently-unearthed key paperwork from the Hammer Archive
  • Double-sided poster

Highlights:

  • Shatter has been newly restored in 4K Ultra HD, marking the first time it has ever been available in this format
  • This restoration reinstates censored material that was originally cut from the film in the 1970s, making it the most complete version ever seen
  • This marks the first-ever Blu-ray release in the UK, making it a must-have for collectors of Hammer, Shaw Brothers, and classic action cinema
  • Shatter is one of the rare films that brings together Britain’s legendary Hammer Films and Hong Kong’s iconic Shaw Brothers studio, blending crime thriller elements with martial arts action
  • It was filmed entirely on location in Hong Kong, giving it a gritty, authentic feel that sets it apart from typical Western crime films of the era
  • The film stars Hollywood’s Stuart Whitman, known for his rugged, hard-edged roles, alongside martial arts icon Ti Lung, a Shaw Brothers legend famous for The Duel and A Better Tomorrow
  • A must-see for Hammer Horror fans, Shatter features a guest appearance by the legendary Peter Cushing, one of the studio’s most beloved stars
  • The film’s cool, funky score comes from David Lindup, a key collaborator of jazz great Johnny Dankworth
  • His music adds to Shatter’s unique blend of British crime grit and Asian action energy

On May 28, 2025, Imprint is releasing the Blu-ray (Region B) for Portrait In Crystal, a 1983 martial arts fantasy directed by Hua Shan (Dynamo, To Kill a Jaguar).

The master of the modern day crime thriller lends his directing skills to this amazing kung-fu crime fantasy. Hua Shan impressed audiences with such films as The Criminals trilogy, then dazzled them in an entirely different way by helming the superheroic Super Inframan and Flying Guillotine 2.

He combines those two genres in this adventure of a mystical mass murderer loose in the underworld. Pai Piao, long the favorite “go-to guy” for most of Shaw Brothers’ best kung-fu filmmakers, shines as the star in this unusual and popular epic.

A noble martial artist discovers that a living statue trained in the art of assassination is responsible for a series of killings in the underworld, and that more murderous statues are on their way if he doesn’t stop them.

RELEASE DATE: June 2025

In June of 2025, Neon Eagle Video is releasing a Blu-ray for The Great Chase, a 1975 martial arts actioner from director Norifumi Suzuki (Roaring Fire).

The Sister Street Fighter herself, Etsuko Shihomi (Bullet Train), stars as Shinobu Yashiro, an accomplished racecar driver who has a side hustle working undercover for the Japanese Defense Agency. Her latest assignment is to break up a heroin smuggling operation that may also be behind the murder of her father.

Directed with exuberance by exploitation expert Norifumi Suzuki, The Great Chase is an action packed, consistently surprising “pinky violence”-lite adventure caper filled with fights and explosions and with just a hint of sleaze to sweeten the deal. It’s also chock-full of oddball details that will keep you on your toes the entire 83 minute running time:

See! Singing lady wrestlers! Drug running, whip-wielding nuns! A blow-dart spewing assassin dressed like a Native American for no reason! A Nazi loving Catholic Bishop/drug-lord who sports a ratty bear suit to assault kidnapped girls! Witness! Etsuko (and her no-doubt underpaid double) do truly perilous and death-defying stunts! Hear! An absolutely banging funk-jazz soundtrack that propels the whole movie along at a breakneck pace!

Neon Eagle Video is delighted to bring you this amazing mid-70s action spectacle for the first time ever in the US and for the first time ever in the world on Blu-ray. This one has been unknown to most people for far too long. Get ready to have a new favorite film!

On June 23, 2025, Arrow Video is releasing the Blu-ray (Region A/B) for The Invisible Swordsman, a 1970 fantasy actioner directed by Yoshiyuki Kuroda (Lone Wolf and Cub: White Heaven in Hell).

Mysterious sprites, eerie supernatural goings on and heroic sword-fighting action abound in this mystical tale of vengeance and adventure from the makers of the Zatoichi, Daimajin and Yokai Monsters films.

In Edo-era Japan, Sanshiro diligently hones his sword-fighting technique at the kendo dojo, but no amount of practice can hide the fact that he is both clumsy and cowardly. When his samurai father falls prey to a gang of murderous phantom thieves while on night watch duties, Sanshiro is drawn to the banks of the Sanzu River that separates the worlds of the living and the dead. Here he encounters a strange being that introduces itself as a Shokera. The otherworldly apparition offers advice on how Sanshiro can avenge his father with the aid of a mysterious potion with the power to turn him invisible. But first Sanshiro must gather the ingredients, and his father’s killers might be closer to home than he thinks.

Directed by Yoshiyuki Kuroda (Yokai Monsters: Spook Warfare, Lone Wolf and Cub: White Heaven in Hell) and beautifully shot by Hiroshi Imai (Zatoichi and the Doomed Man, The Haunted Palace), The Invisible Swordsman boasts the sumptuous attention to its historical setting, costume design, fight choreography and period details that Daiei Kyoto were renowned for, all with an added dose of rip-roaring fantasy and adventure. RELEASE DATE: May 19, 2025

On May 19, 2025, Eureka is releasing a Blu-ray (Region B) for 1968’s The Bells of Death, a standout wuxia film heavily influenced by both the longstanding Japanese samurai tradition and the emergent Spaghetti Western.

The Bells of Death is a fantastical tale of revenge produced by Shaw Brothers Studio, directed by the prolific Yueh Feng (Lady General Hua Mulan) and starring Chang Yi (Lady Whirlwind) in one of his earliest roles.

Wu Fei (Chang) is a simple woodcutter – that is, at least, until he gives directions to a group of bandits he encounters on a lonely road, sending them in the direction of his family home. He returns to find the criminals have murdered his parents and younger brother – while his sister has been kidnapped, claimed by chief bandit Tao Ching Lung (Lam Kau, Drunken Master) as his new bride. Desperate for vengeance, Wu Fei finds a way forward when he encounters a master swordsman (Yang Chi-ching, Come Drink with Me), who takes the woodcutter under his wing and prepares him to take his bloody revenge.

A markedly dark and gruesome wuxia film featuring a cadre of truly despicable villains, The Bells of Death boasts breathtaking cinematography by Pao Hsueh Li – who would go on to direct several wuxia films of his own – and features Hong Kong superstars Wu Ma and Sammo Hung in supporting roles. Eureka Classics is proud to present the film on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK.
