“The kung fu genre was no different, and in 1980 he somehow created the unlikely pairing of Bruce Lee imitator, Bruce Le, and Godfrey Ho’s favorite white guy ninja, Richard Harrison. The movie was Challenge of the Tiger, and in a plot to foil a terrorist group who’ve stolen a formula with the power to kill sperm (yes you read correctly), Le and Harrison head to Spain and battle through crazed bulls, Hwang Jang Lee, and other assorted bad guys.”

Challenge of the Tiger is from 1982 – it would have to be, as the Macau Trotters Club event in it only took place in 1982. I imagine Bruce Le made this alongside Bruce Strikes Back and Pieces back-to-back for Dick Randall.

I think there’s a few of the early Bruce Le films where he is in full on Clone mode that he is a little less than happy with, but he accepts that it was the Bruce Lee influence/image connection that opened the doors for him to have a career and he embraces the opportunities he was given, and the experiences he had making those films

The full interview was meant to show up in a friends book, but gotta check what status of that is, as gonna use the full version for my book and maybe tease a sample online…perhaps on City On Fire to give people a taste

Mike: Have you seen the Lo Lieh/Bruce Le flilm, The Big Boss Part II? Also, what are Le’s reactions to his own films? I always wondered what he thought of the other imitators.

Thanks Mike, glad you enjoyed the review. Agreed about Bruce Le’s movies, out of all of them it seemed to be Bruce Li that got stuck with attempting to portray the actual Bruce Lee the most, but all of the imitators movies in which they get to do their own thing are usually a fun watch. ‘Dragon Force’ is proof of that in Li’s case. 😛

great to see some classic movies and some forgotten cult favourites getting coverage on the site, Ninja Strikes Back is great fun, been re-exploring the Bruce Le back catalogue a lot recently, including watching a few with the man himself…. his films i think are much more fun than most of the bruce lee clones, especially when in so many he just happens to be Bruce Le as opposed to trying to copy Bruce Lee or have any resemblence to Lee’s life and times
